Yesterday was Lammas — August 1st, the first of the harvest sabbats. Today is the second day of what many practitioners consider the Lammas weekend: the Saturday-to-Sunday window when the first-harvest energy is still warm and present and ripe for simple, quiet honoring.

Today’s guide is intentionally accessible. No elaborate altar required. No special tools. No prior experience necessary. If you have bread in the house and a few minutes of quiet, you have everything you need for a meaningful Lammas practice.

🌾 What Is Lammas? The Simplest Explanation

Lammas is a harvest celebration. That’s the starting point — and it’s enough.

More specifically, it’s the first of three harvest celebrations in a year-long cycle of seasonal sabbats called the Wheel of the Year. It falls around August 1st in the Northern Hemisphere, at the height of summer, when the grain crop reaches its peak and the first cutting begins.

The word Lammas comes from the Old English hlaf-mas — ‘loaf mass.’ It was a Christian observance in which bread baked from the first grain of the harvest was brought to church for blessing. The underlying spiritual act — of acknowledging the first fruits, of saying thank you to the earth for what has grown — is far older than the Christian name for it, and far older than any single tradition’s claim on it.

In Celtic traditions, the same day is called Lughnasadh — named for Lugh, a sun deity in Irish mythology, and associated with games, skill, community, and the first fruits of the season. In many Indigenous and agricultural traditions around the world, a first-harvest acknowledgment of some kind marks this time of year.

What all of these traditions share is the same recognition: the earth has given something. Not promised it — given it. And that giving deserves acknowledgment. That is Lammas, in its most essential form. 🌾💜✨

🌀 The Wheel of the Year — All Eight Sabbats

Lammas is one of eight sabbats in the Wheel of the Year — a cycle of seasonal celebrations that marks the turning of the seasons, the cycles of the sun, and the agricultural rhythms of the earth. Here’s the full wheel at a glance:

The Wheel has four Solar Sabbats (the solstices and equinoxes) and four Cross-Quarter Sabbats (which fall between them). The Cross-Quarter sabbats — Imbolc, Beltane, Lammas, and Samhain — are often described as the more intensely felt of the eight, because they mark the peak of each season rather than its transition. Lammas is the peak of summer’s abundance. 🌀💜✨

This question sounds simple. In practice, for many of us, it is one of the harder spiritual questions of the year. We are very practiced at wanting, planning, and moving forward. We are less practiced at stopping, seeing what is already here, and allowing it to be genuinely, honestly enough.

You don’t need to feel like everything went perfectly this summer. You don’t need a long list of achievements. You don’t need to have met your goals or kept your intentions or done anything particularly impressive. The harvest is whatever grew — not whatever you planned to grow. And the practice of Lammas is naming that honestly and receiving it with gratitude. Even the gaps and the failures are part of the harvest — they’re the soil for next year’s planting.

There is something I want to name about beginner’s mind at Lammas that I find genuinely useful, even after years of practice: the simplest version of this sabbat is often the most powerful.

Buying a loaf of bread and eating it slowly with the intention of receiving the harvest — that is Lammas. Going outside and standing in late-summer warmth for five minutes and feeling grateful — that is Lammas. Writing three things on a piece of paper that have genuinely grown this summer and reading them aloud — that is Lammas.

The ceremony from yesterday’s paid kit is rich and meaningful. But the essence of the sabbat is available in five minutes, with bread you bought at the grocery store and a sentence of honest gratitude. The earth doesn’t require your expertise. It only requires your attention. 🌾💜✨

🌾 Carrying the Lammas Weekend Forward

• Keep a small harvest symbol — a seed, a flower, a stone, a sunflower petal — somewhere visible through the week as a reminder of what has grown

You are attuning yourself to the actual rhythms of the natural world, which are also the rhythms of your own creative and spiritual life.

Lammas sits at the top of the cycle’s productive arc — the moment of maximum fullness before the long descent toward winter begins. Working with it, even simply, even imperfectly, connects you to something much older and much larger than any individual tradition: the universal human recognition that the earth gives, that giving deserves gratitude, and that abundance is real, present, and worth stopping to notice.

This weekend, stop. Notice. Receive. That is the whole practice, and it is enough. 🌾💜✨

This has been true every year for billions of years. Long before any of us were here to notice it, the Sun was blazing its longest day. Long after we are gone, it will blaze again. And today, right now, you are alive to feel it. That is the gift. ☀️✨

The ancient ones knew this was sacred. Stonehenge, aligned with this exact sunrise. The Midsummer bonfires lit on hilltops across Europe. The flowers gathered on Solstice Eve, said to carry the year’s most potent healing energy. The feasts, the dances, the celebrations. Human beings have been marking this day with joy and reverence for as long as we have been human beings. Today you add your voice to that ancient chorus. ☀️🌿✨

☀️ Your Litha Day Ritual — Three Simple Moments

You don’t need an elaborate ceremony today. You need three moments of genuine presence: one at sunrise (or whenever you first step outside this morning), one at noon, and one at sunset. Each one takes five minutes or less. Each one is complete in itself. ☀️🌿✨

🌿 The Litha Gratitude Practice

This is the simplest, most essential Litha practice of all. Find five minutes today — any five minutes — and do this. ☀️✨

Open your journal or a piece of paper. Write at the top: “What grew in me in the first half of 2026?”

Write everything that comes. Not what you wish had grown — what actually did. The skill you developed. The relationship that deepened. The habit you built. The thing you finally said. The project you started. The version of yourself that quietly, steadily emerged. The healing that happened more than you noticed. The courage you used. The love you gave. The capacity you built.

When you’re done, read the list aloud if you can. Then say: “This is what the light grew in me. I am grateful for every single thing on this list.” ☀️🌿✨

Today is May 1st — Beltane — and the world outside is doing something extraordinary. Have you noticed? Everything is blooming at once. The light is stretching longer every day. The air has that particular quality it only has in late spring — warm and green and full of something that feels almost electric. ✨

That electricity has a name. It’s Beltane energy.

If you’re new to the Wheel of the Year and you’ve been hearing witches and spiritual practitioners talk about Beltane but weren’t quite sure what it was — today’s post is your beginner’s guide. We’re covering everything: what Beltane is, where it comes from, what it means spiritually, how it’s traditionally celebrated, and five simple ways to honor it today even if you have no tools, no altar, and no idea where to start. 🔥✨

🔥 What Is Beltane?

Beltane is one of the eight Sabbats on the Wheel of the Year — the ancient calendar of seasonal celebrations used in many earth-based spiritual traditions. It falls on May 1st each year (or the eve of April 30th) and marks the midpoint between the spring equinox and the summer solstice. 🌸

In terms of the Wheel, Beltane is the point of maximum expansion into light. We’ve been building toward summer since Imbolc in February, gathering momentum through Ostara in March. Now, at Beltane, we arrive at the moment when life is at its most exuberant, most fertile, most fully alive.

The name Beltane comes from the ancient Celtic tradition. It’s thought to derive from Bel — a name for a Celtic deity of light and fire — and teine, the Irish word for fire. Bright fire. Shining fire. The fire that welcomes the full summer sun. 🔥

Beltane was one of the most important festivals in the Celtic year, sitting alongside Samhain (October 31st), Imbolc (February 1st), and Lughnasadh (August 1st) as one of the four great fire festivals. It was a time of community celebration, of hope for abundant harvests, of joy and vitality and the full flowering of spring.

🌸 The Energy of Beltane

Every Sabbat has its own distinct energy — a particular quality of feeling and focus that makes it different from every other point on the Wheel. Beltane’s energy is perhaps the most vibrant and life-affirming of the entire year. 🔥✨

🏛️ How Beltane Was Traditionally Celebrated

The historical celebrations of Beltane were vivid, communal, and deeply connected to the land. Here’s what our ancestors did on this day: 🔥🌸

The Beltane Bonfires 🔥

Great fires were lit on hilltops at Beltane — sometimes two fires side by side. Communities would gather, and cattle were driven between the two flames to bless and protect them for the coming season. People leapt the fires for luck, fertility, and purification. The fire was the heart of the festival.

The Maypole 🌸

One of the most iconic Beltane traditions is the Maypole — a tall pole decorated with ribbons and flowers around which dancers weave an intricate pattern. The Maypole is a symbol of the axis of the world, the union of earth and sky, the weaving together of different lives and energies into something beautiful. Even today, Maypole dancing remains a tradition in many British and European villages.

Gathering the May 🌼

People would go out at dawn to gather flowers, branches, and greenery to decorate their homes and altars. Hawthorn blossom — called the May tree — was especially sacred. Waking early to wash your face in the morning dew was believed to bring beauty, health, and good fortune. ✨

Leaving Offerings 🌱

Food and drink were left out as offerings at sacred wells, at the base of trees, and at the boundaries of property. These were gifts to the spirits of the land, to the ancestors, and to the faerie folk — whose activity was thought to be at its peak at Beltane. 🌸🔥

🌸 5 Simple Ways to Celebrate Beltane Today

You don’t need a bonfire or a Maypole to honor Beltane. Here are five beautiful, beginner-friendly ways to bring the energy of this Sabbat into your day — no special tools required. 🔥✨

🔥 1. Light a Candle With Intention

The bonfire is the heart of Beltane — but any flame will do. Light a red, orange, or white candle somewhere in your home. As the flame catches, say: “I welcome the fire of Beltane. I welcome passion, vitality, and the full blooming of my life.”

Let it burn while you go about your day. Every time you see the flame, let it remind you that you are alive and full of fire. 🔥✨

🌸 2. Bring Flowers Into Your Home

Beltane is deeply associated with flowers and blossoming. If you can, gather some fresh flowers — from your garden, a walk outside, or even a supermarket bunch. Arrange them somewhere beautiful in your home.

Fold the paper. Keep it on your windowsill or altar. Or if you have a candle burning, burn it safely as an offering to the fire. 🔥

🌅 4. Go Outside at Dawn or Dusk

Beltane sits exactly halfway through the year. By now you have a sense of who you are in 2026, what you’ve been building, what’s working, what isn’t. Write a letter to your future self at Samhain (October 31st).

Tell them what you’re planting today. What you hope will have bloomed by the time they read this. What you’re brave enough to commit to in the fire of Beltane.

Seal it. Keep it somewhere safe. Open it on Samhain. 🔥🌸✨
